Genealogy of the WRAGG surname of Yorkshire and Derbyshire Variants:-Ragge/Ragg/Rage I have researched this family back to a marriage of William Wragg and Bridget Espinall at North Wingfield DBY on the 8 July 1608. The line comes through their son George bpt 1618 and married a Dorothy, the marriage has not been found but may have been in Nottinghamshire. All their children were born in North Wingfield DBY. The line then comes down through William Wragg bpt 1656 who married Elizabeth Riggott in 1685. William took over Stretton Hall farm near North Wingfield. William became tenant of the farm in 1683. My line then comes through their son George Wragg bpt 1690/1 in North Wingfield and married Mary Beighton in Aston YKS on the 5 June 1717. They had 8 children in Treeton YKS. George's will of 1770 left estates at Bradfield, Beighton and Chesterfield. The name appears in the churchyard of Treeton church and includes one of their sons Francis who was also the Curate. All those mentioned above were Yeomen and I have some of their Wills. The next line is through William bpt 1718 who married Elizabeth Beighton in Sheffield on the 3 October 1745. William died before his father and left his estate to him and his brother John. On his fathers death the eldest Grandson George inherited the estate, my line and others received nothing from their Grandfathers Will. The Beighton families of Mary and Elizabeth are probably linked but so far have not found the connection, but the Beighton's and also Froggatt's are all yeomen in and around North DBY and South YKS. In later times my Grandparent's were William Wragg born in Sheffield in 1883 and married Emily Annie Martin on the 26 June 1904. They had three sons Clifford 1904, Willie 1907 and my father Leslie 1909 all born in Sheffield. Other surnames linked to the family are: Beighton, Froggatt, Ardron, Milner, Baggalley, Hides, Tinker, Rodgers, Bright and Mallender all South YKS & North DBY My own name should be Wragg and is explained on the Martin page.
